At fourteen I saw the TRS-80 Model I in the Radio Shack catalogue and had to have it. I made pizzas at the Earl of Sandwich in Northbrook Court for two dollars and sixty-five cents an hour until I’d saved enough, and I bought it in 1979. My mom asked what I was even going to do with a computer. Neither of us knew yet, but that machine turned out to be the start of the whole career.
This is a full emulator of that same computer, running in your browser: the video display, the contrast and brightness dials, tape and disk support, even period-correct games like Dancing Demon and Colossal Cave Adventure loaded and ready.
It’s the closest thing I’ve built to a time machine. My first computer, my first hint that this was going to be my life’s work, playable again forty-some years later.
